PLAN YOUR TIME IN MADRID

What to do in Madrid when it rains

Choose an indoor plan in Madrid: a museum, a relaxed day in the centre or a show. Practical advice on tickets, timing and budget.

Choose one area and one main visit

For a rainy day, build your plans around a museum or a performance. A booked visit gives you a starting point for deciding where to eat and how much time to allow for travel. Trying to fit three museums into one day leaves little time to enjoy their galleries.

If you already have a booking, start with its location. Otherwise, check availability before planning the rest of the day. These are planning suggestions, not opening schedules.

Option 1: art around the Paseo del Prado

The Prado and Thyssen are two choices for a day focused on art. The Thyssen is at Paseo del Prado, 8, and publishes its programme, opening times and admission information online. Choose the collection or exhibition you actually want to see; being nearby does not mean you need to visit both museums.

  1. Check admission for your chosen visit and save your confirmation on your phone.
  2. Allow time to get there and go through entry checks. Read the rules for bags and umbrellas.
  3. Take a break for lunch afterwards, then decide whether to add another activity or finish there.

Option 2: bookshops, a café and a show

If a major museum is not what you have in mind, Madrid's tourism office lists bookshops, cafés, cultural venues, cinemas and theatres among its rainy-day options. Pick one main activity and a second nearby, rather than making a checklist to finish.

You could plan an exhibition in the morning, a leisurely lunch and an afternoon performance. Alternatively, book only the performance and leave the rest of the day flexible. There will still be outdoor journeys between stops. Check the map and adjust travel to the weather and everyone in your group.

For cinema or theatre, check the language. For flamenco, compare whether the price covers only the show or also a drink or dinner. Different ticket options are not necessarily equivalent.

Keep the budget clear

Plan separately for admission, transport and food. A free exhibition does not make the whole day free. A museum's free-entry periods may also have different conditions for temporary exhibitions or special activities.

The Thyssen advertises free days and time slots on its website. Check what they include and whether you need to arrange a ticket first. If the timing does not fit your plans, compare regular admission with choosing another activity instead of building the entire day around a slot you cannot use.

With children, one visit and a proper break may be enough. Our Madrid with kids guide helps you adapt the pace. If the rain stops, pick a short section of the free Madrid walking route rather than trying to finish every stop.
