Plaza Mayor

The present square developed in the seventeenth century after a fire at the earlier market. Plaza Mayor preserves the relationship between gathering, trade and architecture that helps explain a historic centre. Its development connects with an earlier marketplace, while today's appearance encourages you to observe façades and arcades as one ensemble. Walk along a side before crossing the middle: changing perspectives reveal how streets open into the square. An operating market is not necessary to enjoy it, nor should you assume a celebration is always taking place. Pause and look at the old Town Hall within its surroundings. Afterwards, continue towards San Martín and the Barrio Húmedo, remembering these streets are also places where people live and work every day.
