Santa María gateway

Santa María gateway makes the old relationship between a walled city and its river visible. Before passing through, notice how it combines gate, tower and monumental façade. It was more than a frame for entering Burgos: government and defensive functions also belonged here. The passage leads towards the cathedral, allowing a comparison between civil and religious representations of power. Pause without obstructing movement and observe the ensemble from both sides. Any interior visit has its own admission arrangements; walking through the gate does not guarantee access to its rooms. This is a useful starting point for a compact walk through the historic centre.
